Should I Build an Outdoor Kitchen?

For the last few years, outdoor kitchens have been a big trend. But, is it worth the investment?

The Rising Popularity of Outdoor Kitchens

In the past, most people were satisfied with a standalone grill to complete their backyard cooking. Whether they opted for a simple charcoal grill or a deluxe gas grill with all the extras, it just wasn’t even an option to go much beyond that. Some people installed outdoor bars, but that wasn’t very mainstream, either.

Now, all that has changed. Many people are looking for outdoor kitchens when house shopping. Outdoor kitchens can include built in grills, wood ovens, fully stocked bars, fridges, gorgeous stone countertops, storage for all your grilling items, and more. They’re usually paired with a deluxe outdoor seating area that might include a deluxe dining area with a fire pit and comfy seating, including cozy outdoor sofas that are far more luxurious than the patio furniture of yesteryear. They’re amazing for get-togethers of any kind, and the idea seems attractive to just about anybody!

But is it a good investment?

Outdoor Kitchen

Here in Virginia, unfortunately, it’s not quite as good of an investment as it is for our Southern neighbors. There simply aren’t as many days of the year where using an outdoor kitchen is feasible. And since outdoor kitchens are hefty investments, it will be disappointing if our cold and rainy seasons result in you using it less than you’d hoped. However, there are quite a few potential buyers who are certainly looking for outdoor kitchens, so it’s likely that an outdoor kitchen will make your property more marketable.

We suggest that if you want one, go for it! Just don’t go overboard with tons of expensive details. Outdoor kitchens can be costly to build and maintain. Since we deal with rain, snow, and other harsh weather in our area of the country, it’s important that outdoor kitchens are properly sheltered, or you’ll be dealing with costly repairs before long. Since we can’t enjoy our outdoor kitchens all year long in Virginia, it’s possible that you won’t get quite as much enjoyment out of your investment as you’d hoped. For that reason, we suggest that our clients build modest outdoor kitchens and save their money to pull out all the stops on their indoor kitchen instead. That way, you’ll still have a great entertaining space that can be expanded outdoors, but the “fun stuff” won’t just be relegated to summertime use.

Think about what’s most important to you in an outdoor kitchen. We really like the ones that simply include a nice gas grill with built-in countertops for easy prep and serving.
